The Contender and Jonathan Reid
3/05/05
by Clay

Deadlyhippos.com is suddenly awash in reality television connections. First DJ's own brother, David, made a star performance as the first ever NBA player to do the following:

1. actually be on MTV's Real World
2. dip Skoal
3. appear in public without a 'ho
4. flip his collar up
5. use correct grammar for an entire television appearance.

While it will be hard for anyone to live up to David's peformance, Nashville's own Jonathan Reid has the deadlyhippos seal of approval for his upcoming performance on NBC's new boxing reality show, The Contender.

For the final two years of law school, Lara trained with Jonathan until she became a threat to snatch away the title of manliest member of the Clay and Lara relationship. (Of course as soon as the relationship started she was the more athletic, the toughest, the best looking, and the smartest. Really I bring very little value to any relationship, but even less to this one). Regardless at this point, I began to train as a boxer three times a week with Jonathan. During this training period, Jonathan had the following catchphrases,

1. "Champs or chumps, who's it going to be?"
Quite often I was a chump.
2. "Let's get it cracking."
I very rarely cracked.
3. "Crackalackacracka"
I very rarely knew what this meant. Once Jonathan assured me he was not calling me a cracker.

After six months of training, I brought in two other members of deadlyhippos, KWo and Tardio. The 27 was extended an invitation but demurred citing his poor ligament history. At the first meeting, KWo moped, groaned, set a new record for haymakers thrown during a constant punch drill (he leaned on the bag and every few seconds threw a huge punch) and gave our friend Demko a bloody nose. After this KWo was utterly convinced he could beat up anyone anywhere. So in addition to be a fount of wisdom on relationships, KWo can also kick your ass. Tardio had no similarly memorable events, but he did determine Jonathan was not a fan of the OC.

On a recent trip back to Nashville over Christmas, Lara and I once again stopped by to hang out with Jonathan. He was tight-lipped about the outcome of the show, but did mention a ton of celebrities who came to watch the bouts. So it is with absolute certainty that the staff of deadlyhippos.com announces our fervent support of Jonathan Reid's quest to become the contender. Below is a link to Jonathan's bio page on the contender website.
